In September 2013,Sanriku Geopark was certified as one of the Japan Geoparks. The Sanriku Geoparak covers the area from Hachinohe City in Aomori Prefecture, through the coast of Iwate Prefecture, down to Kesennuma City in Miyagi Prefecture. It is the largest geopark in Japan that is about 220 km north-south and about 80 km east-west, the coastline is about 300 km.
At the Geopark, you can enjoy learning about the connections between these three elements, "geo," "eco," and "human." Geoparks cover not only the topography and geology created by global activities, but also the lives, history, and food of people who are deeply associated with them.
Beautiful scenery that you can see with your eyes, sounds of hot springs that you can hear with your ears, chirping of birds, the atmosphere of the area that you can see with its scent, the feel of soil and stone that you can use with your hands, and delicious local food that you can taste with your tongue. Please take full advantage of your five senses and feel the beauty of Geopark with your whole body. In the scenery that spreads out in front of you and in the food that you eat, there are many hidden stories about the relationship between the earth and people.
At the moment, we are unfortunately unable to say that we would like to see you in order to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus infectious disease that is raging all over the world.
For that reason, we have prepared the following videos that will give you the feeling of traveling on a virtual Sanriku Geopark. (Courtesy: Sanriku Geopark Promotion Council Thank you!)
